Smt.Krishnaveni Lakshmanan

Nritya Choodamani Krishnaveni Lakshmanan (Born 20th June 1942), The Doyenne of Bharatanatyam was a versatile dancer, choreographer, singer, and teacher of eminence.

Krishnaveni Lakshmanan is one of the finest Bharatanatyam artistes ever to come out of Kalakshetra. She has captivated theatre lovers over the decades in her unforgettable portrayals, be it as Sita, Andal, Mohini, and Vasanthavalli.

She secured First Class Distinction in her Diploma in Bharatanatyam in 1959, Kalakshetra. She had her Arangetram on 13th January 1960, and once again secured First Class Distinction in Post Graduate Diploma in Bharatanatyam,1962 Kalakshetra.

Krishnaveni Lakshmanan is also proficient in Kathakali, Mohiniattam, Kuchipudi and Folk Dances. She has served as the Principal of Kalakshetra from 1998 to 2000.   

Krishnaveni Lakshmanan has been awarded with many Major Awards like Nritya Choodamani 1976, UNESCO Medal  Paris 1984,Central Sangeet Natak Akademi Award 1986, and Kalaimamani from Tamil Nadu Eyal Isai Nataka Mandram 2003 .

Smt.Krishnaveni Lakshmanan is the mother, Guru  of Smt.Gayatri Krishnaveni Lakshmanan. 

Krishnaveni Lakshmanan breathe her last on August 29 2004

Krishnaveni Amma lives on in the Natyam that she has taught us.Her legacy will continue for many more generations to come.
